I ran out of the right wire so I used 10 gauge speaker wire for EVERYTHING. Except for the sub amp’s power cables. Luckily the JL amp has a passthrough so I can get RCA to the sub amp and the rear channel. Gonna need a splitter to get RCA to the front channel, but honestly this hodgepodge of utter horseshit sound really good if I just plug my phone into the RCA jack through an adaptor. I got some $20 Walmart head unit but there’s an obscene amount of engine interference through it. Might see if I can put a ground filter or something on it.

EDIT: Let’s count the sins.

1. No power distribution block. Power cables for second amp just jammed in first amp’s terminals

2. Amps are loose in trunk.

3. Inappropriate wire gauges. I doubt that Xplod draws anywhere near the power it says but that thing needs 8 gauge.

4. My remote wires are speaker wire and indisinguishable from the rest of this mess

5. Nothing is bundled

6. Sony Xplod

7. Seriously using an Xplod 4-channel amp

8. Dear god what has my life come to (answer: poverty-spec car audio builds)

But make sure to every single music file is in FLAC. My car speakers are shitty but my high fidelity prevents distortion to another level. And plus it sounds like sex.

Picture of the head unit? Is it the media only one? Did you try putting a big ground additionally to the body of the radio and to the dashboard frame somewhere?

I had an Xplod head unit in my old Tacoma.

I know you don’t have any money but any radio that doesn’t have a cd player these days is pretty shallow. I know there’s a $75 pioneer with Bluetooth that should fit. I recently got a $60 Pioneer with a cd player because I have space for it and I don’t feel like ripping all my CDs.

I spy a harbor freight screwdriver set, got the same one.

Also, hearing your tale and looming at your photos, reminds me of my very first audio install on my p71 when I was in highschool. Long story short, it worked fine until a 90 year old tboned it after running a stop sign. Couple of zip ties and you’ll be fine

Theres no such thing as too thick of wire, as long as it fits in the terminals.

I'm just waiting for the name change of "Jake - Burned his last driving car down with haphazzardly installed audio equipment" Seriously secure your damned amps. I dont care if you grab a piece of particle board and screw them into the trunk liner, just do something so your car isnt a rolling fire hazzard.

I didn’t word that very well. I’m using far too thin of a power wire from the JL to the Xplod (10 gauge when I should be using 8 gauge).

My current method of securing them is to throw as much shit as I can into the trunk to the point where NOTHING moves. Right now they’re sandwiched between my two toolboxes until I can get some MDF and mount them to the front wall of the trunk. Everything that gets power is fused, as well, for what that’s worth.

ehh, It depends on your run length. at 20 amps (240 watts @12V, more at 13.5V running voltage) you get about 22mV/foot drop versus 15mV/foot for 8 Gauge. Depending on your normal draw, and what kind of caps are in the amps, you might never notice. As long as it’s fused at a reasonable current, you should be fine. if you are really worried about it and have spare wire, you could double it up. It’s ghetto as hell, but it would work.

Ghetto is my middle name. Honestly I doubt this Sony Xplod draws more than 100 watts. Ever. 10 gauge should be fine for the four inch run. I just can’t wait to get a working head unit and door speakers.
